The League Concept

The National Gymnastics League is a new grassroots British Gymnastics affiliated Teams Competition aimed at gymnasts training between 2 and 10 hrs per week. It is proposed to launch across he 10 BG regions in 2027.

The League concept offers a modern, robust, competitive and manageable structure aimed at increasing participation and improving the competitive experience. The League will provide everything a club needs to deliver a best in class competition including access to online scoring systems, live online league tables for individuals and clubs, ticket management, judging guidance, and clear scheduling and time tabling.

The NGL will hold 3 Rounds and a National Final each year. The first 2 Rounds will be will run as seperate Boys and Girls Competitions, the the 3rd round being an exciting mixed competition. Leagues will be divided into the 10 British Gymnastics Regions, and Regions can have as many leagues as they want. Each League will consist of no more than 6 clubs, each team will consist of 6 gymnasts, and each Round will have no more than 36 gymnasts ensuring quick and efficiently run competitions.

In addition to the NGL League we will also have an Open League, this is an opportunity for smaller clubs to host 2 piece competitions that can be used by League Members as specialist practice or to post PBs. There is no limit to the number of Open League competitions ensuring that everyone participating can compete.

Season 1 will be the pilot year held in the East Region. It will run the full format except the National Final. During the first seasons we will also be looking for clubs accross the country to beinvolved in 2027. Clubs that join can benefit from becoming Regional League Partners, League Hosts, or Open League Hosts.

Aims of the Project:

·         Improve competition integrity.

·         Maximise opportunity for interclub competition at all levels.

·         Increase participation and retention in gymnastics.

·         Significantly reduce competition times.

·         Modernise the competition format.

·         Align to progressive ideas.

·         Encourage more clubs to host and share financial return.

Introduction

We need to change the way we compete in General gymnastics if we want to attract and retain more gymnasts. The National Gymnastics League does this by introducing a format familiar to the children from other sports with a strong emphasis on simplicity, integrity, fairness, reward, teamwork and fun. The league is aimed at clubs whose gymnasts train up to 10 hours per week.

This initiative has grown out of conversations and challenges observed in General gymnastics. Competitions often aren’t engaging, don’t have many clubs attending, are too long, over run and there are often inaccuracies in scoring. Other sports such as swimming and football do a lot better at engaging the participants through leagues and team events, and gymnastics needs to take note. We believe this league provides a modern, sustainable solution to those barriers.

If you want to gain an understanding of what we aspire to achieve we would suggest visiting swimming’s Arena National League website Home Of The National Arena Swimming League

A Modern Approach to Gymnastics

The National Gymnastics League represents an opportunity to rethink how we deliver competitive boys and girls gymnastics:

·         Localised venues means lower costs for travel and accommodation, and it makes it easier for clubs to fit it into their existing schedule. The aim is for travel to be no more than 1.5 hrs.

·         3 Simple fixed levels enables real skill tracking across seasons and the possibilities of PBs. It also supports more accurate judging.

·         Capped numbers ensures competitions don’t over run and remain short, but it also encourages training to be selected for the team.

·         Only 4 Age Categories  helps increase numbers per category without sacrificing fairness.

·         League tables and awards keep gymnasts engaged without over-complicating routines.

We are also exploring integration with Just Go, allowing:

·         Centralised gymnast registration through BG brings legitimacy and integrity to the competition and enabling more streamlined communication.

·         Link to hours training via Just Go. We are currently working with Just Go to develop a class management system that in the future will enable us to ensure that gymnasts are entering the correct training category therefore helping to improve fairness.

·         Single electronic score system minimizes risk of errors and standardizes across competitions. We are proposing a club version of BG Score or similar that should be available for all clubs but could be tested with this competition.

·         Real-time leaderboards for gymnasts and clubs will bring a familiar sense of competition and team involvement to the sport.

We are also exploring opportunities with third party scoring systems such as Elevien to:

  • Have routines filmed and posted live onto the platform enabling extended family and friends to see the competition.

  • To hold Remote Leagues where clubs that are geographically isolated, or struggle to get judges can still compete using video technology and a remote judging panel.

Key Features

We want to make this league run in a consistent and familiar way wherever it is being held. We want the rules to be the same at every event, the timing and format and officiating standards to be consistently high. The more we can replicate this familiarity, the more likely we can get people to attend.

·         Pilot tarting January 2026 (with a possible test Event at the end of September 2025).

·         There will be 3 League Rounds in Year 1. Each Round will consist of 2 x competitions. The first 2 rounds will see Girls and Boys compete separately. The 3rd Round will see them compete in mixed teams to reflect the new IOC format.

·         All Events to be held on a Sunday preferably at the same times (TBC). The competitions would last circa 3hrs, with each Round lasting circa 6 hours (2 competitions per round). This ensures younger children can leave earlier and that there are reasonable travel times before and after the competitions.

·         Limited numbers to 6 gymnasts per round, or 36 per competition (72 per Event). This may increase to 8, but we would rather increase the number of Leagues per Region, than the number of gymnasts per competition.

·         Gymnasts will be able to choose which pieces they compete in although the total number of gymnasts will be fixed.

·         Online League tables for individual gymnasts and clubs.

·         Points allocated to Top 6 gymnast’s in each category contribute towards league table.

·         PB tracking by gymnasts.

·         Awards presented at each event.

·         Flexible attendance model: Clubs may rotate gymnasts between competitions. In this format the same gymnasts don't need to attend every event. Clubs can either send their strongest performers or rotate participants across their wider team to represent the club. Every gymnast competes for both personal performance and club points, creating opportunity and motivation across all levels.

Open League and Remote League Events

Limiting the size of these competitions ensures that every Event will follow the same timings and not over run. However, it also means that some people may not be selected to attend. In order to meet this possible demand we are thinking of running a number of Open League events throughout the year. Open League Events are not only designed for gymnasts who were not selected for the team competitions, but also for clubs who may just want to compete in just 1 or 2 pieces (e.g. Floor and Vault).

These events give gymnasts the chance to lodge a score in the league, improve their personal best, and remain part of the competitive journey. The Open League Events will be piece focused, for example just floor and vault. This enables all clubs, what ever their size to get the opportunity to host an event and generate revenue.

As previously mentioned we are also looking at Remote Leagues that utilise the video technology of third party providers. This is an incredibly exciting development that will increase participation for clubs that would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend.

Schedule (2026/27). This is just indicative.

We have planned a draft schedule around the existing Regional and National competitions to ensure that the NGL complements rather than conflicts with existing structures.

Numbers and Caps

We want all competitions to last no more than 3 hrs from getting out the car to being back in again. Guaranteeing start and finish times will require a cap to events which is proposed at 6 gymnasts per rotation, which means that each club can send a minimum of 12 boys or girls to each Round. Spaces will be allocated equally to the league clubs with any spaces not taken being re-allocated fairly. Depending on the equipment available we may be able to increase this number to allow greater participation and depending on the number of clubs in the league, the number of spaces allocated to each club may vary.

The Open League Events will be reduced apparatus competitions and may well be held at smaller clubs so numbers may vary.

League Scoring

Individual Scoring (Per Apparatus)

·         Each gymnast performs once on the apparatus (e.g. Floor)

·         Judges score their routine

·         Gymnasts are ranked by score within their competition group

·         Medals are awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

·         A league table shows each gymnast’s scores on this piece and ranks them accordingly.

Club Scoring (Per Round)

·         Points are awarded to the top 6 gymnasts in each competition as follows:

1st place = 6 points

2nd place = 5 points

3rd place = 4 points

4th place = 3 points

5th place = 2 points

6th place = 1 point

7th and below = 0 points

·         A club’s total score for that apparatus round is the sum of all points earned by its gymnasts.

·         Clubs are ranked by total points in that round.

·         In the case of a tie, the club with the highest individual placing takes precedence.

Judging

The quality and accuracy of judging is a priority if the league is to have integrity. The proposal is that every league club needs to nominate a single judge who will be trained on the rules and the scoring system. All judges will be expected to attend every League event. It’s possible that in time a remote judging concept may be introduced allowing the same judges to be used across the League. This would be a very new concept further enhancing the integrity of the competition.

 Hosting clubs and Travel Times

We want travel time to competitions to be no longer than 1.5 hrs (with under an hour being the target). This will encourage participation, and help with the fact that they are competing on a single piece.

If the league expands it will become easier to achieve this target but to begin with we will remove the clubs that are further away from being hosts.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 NATIONAL GYMNASTICS LEAGUE

  • To deliver the League as a ‘One stop shop’ total solution to the Regional League Partners (RLP). Including Merchandise, Training, Technology, League Management, Scheduling, Time tabling etc.

  • To manage the financials for tickets and ensure remuneration is distributed to RLP’s and host clubs.

    REGIONAL LEAGUE PARTNERS (RLP’s)

  • The RLPs will facilitate the running of their league.

  • They will nominate a Event Manager to run each Round. Clubs will be remunerated for this.

  • Ideally they will also be host clubs.

  • They will help find League members, facilitate communication of the model, and help with training when required.

  • RLP’s will meet on an annual basis to discuss the Season ahead, share best practice and problem solve challenges.

  • RLP’s will be financially remunerated for their work.

    LEAGUE HOST CLUBS (LHC’s)

  • League Host Clubs will host 1 of the 3 annual Rounds. They have to have all 4 or 6 pieces, and room for a minimum one spectator per gymnast.

  • League Hosts will be remunerated for their work.

OPEN LEAGUE HOST (OLH’s)

  • Open League Hosts can be any size club that has any 2 of the men’s pieces.

  • They can host an Open League/Practice session for League members. These sessions will allow gymnasts to practice their routines in a competition environment and to post PB’s. There will be no points allocated to the main league from these events.

Financial Structure

The National Gymnastics League has been designed so that virtually all clubs can host a round be it a 6 Piece competition at the larger clubs, or an Open League event at the smaller clubs. All clubs therefore could benefit from income generated.  The draft plan is that:

·         It’s proposed that each club pays a fixed league entry fee at the start of each Season

·         The tickets for each round (both gymnast and spectator) will be purchased via the Just Go event management system. This ensures all gymnasts are British Gymnastics members, and in the future will support the integrity of the competitions by checking training hours.

·         At this stage it is thought that gymnast entry will be £5 per piece per gymnast, keeping costs down and maximizing accessibility. Spectator entry will also be £5 per person with the host club taking all proceeds from spectator ticket sales plus a host fee from the NGL.

·         The NGL will provide all marketing support, schedule sheets, registers and access to scoring systems to all host clubs.

Why Join the National Gymnastics League?

 For the gymnast

·         Being selected for the next round team will boost training and encourage focus throughout the year.

·         Being part of a team will boost the feeling of inclusion.

·         Being able to track progress against baseline routines will encourage progression.

·         The introduction of individual score tracking is as a close as the sport can get to PB’s which are very motivational.

·         Competitions are well organized and planned minimizing the risk of running over.

·         Competitions are local with short travelling times.

·         Competitions are no more than 3 hours long.

For clubs

·         Clubs can plan training around fixed competitions with clear routines.

·         Flexible hosting — most clubs will be able to host an event in a year.

·         Allows gymnasts of all abilities to develop, with progressive routines.

·         A modern, technical foundation for future growth.

·         Financial model designed to benefit everyone, not just one club

·         Clubs can rotate gymnasts across the season, broadening access and team involvement

·         Ultimately clubs will be able to attract and retain more gymnasts
